Antique Chinese Painted Elm Cabinet, late Qing Dynasty, c. 1880, from Shanxi province. Originally a top opening "rice" storage cabinet, the front panels were cut out to make a much more functional 6- door large buffet. The case was painted black, which is now well worn, and the panels (doors) in a gray background with naive circular scenes of flowers and birds. This is an outstanding quality example of folk art decoration and I would be happy to have this in my home (if I only had space!)
