CHANGING LEAVES, HIDDEN TREASURE

ISSUE NO. 1

Stuart Hough, Sunnyside Trading Co.

Changing seasons offer a time for reflection and introspection. What do I want to do more of? Where do I want to invest my time?  What matters to me?  Changing of the seasons also means the chance to change up our everyday setup, whether it is the addition of a new piece or simply switching around what we already have.  And we can’t forget all the cozy blankets, fall-scented candles, and pumpkins galore.

With the advent of fall, Sunnyside Trading Co. is changing it up, too! This includes the release of a new bi-weekly e-Newsletter, called The Caravan! The aim of this newsletter is to take you on a journey: sharing some of our favorite treasures and inviting you to experience the history behind them. And six times a year, we will deliver an expanded version called The Bazaar. Much like the old bazaars along The Silk Road served as a trading post for caravans, this larger digest will serve as an intersection of goods, places, and artisans, spotlighting local artists; chronicling our travels; and providing an inside scoop on new arrivals!  Our first issue covers Damachiyas!

Damachiya, which translates to “Dowry Chest,” is a traditional piece of Indian furniture commissioned by a family to hold a prospective bride’s embroideries and textile creations that she would bring with her to the new marriage.  After the wedding, the damachiya was often placed in the room occupied by the newlyweds as a reminder of the new addition to the household.

Damachiyas come in many shapes, colors and sizes.  They also differ by the region of Indian In which they were crafted.  We are excited to share several 100+ year old Damachiyas with you, all of which hail from Rajasthan.  Some are painted with bright colors and covered in mirrors; others are adorned with beautiful folk art and animals; and we even have some minimalist options that showcase the natural teakwood carvings.

In addition to offering stylish storage, many damachiyas come with hidden compartments to hide valuables.  In fact, some folks have found stashed jewels that were hidden for decades!  Whatever treasures you want to store inside, this piece of history will surely make a statement in any room.
