Thai carved wood and gilded sitting Buddha figure, contemporary
The youthful sweet-faced image of the Buddha wearing an elaborately folded robe, often decorated with mirror glass, has become known as the "Mandalay" Buddha, and came to represent the Burmese representation of the Buddha. In the 19th century, King Mingon moved the capital to this new site and named the city Mandalay. Mandalay was considered the center of the Buddhist universe in Burma, now known as Myanmar.
