Thai carved wood painted and gilded "Mandalay" Buddha figure, contemporary

Thai carved wood and gilded "Mandalay" Buddha figure, contemporary, with the mudra or hand position being the double Abhaya mudra, the mudra of no fear, representing protection, peace, benevolence, and dispelling of fear.

The youthful sweet-faced image of the Buddha wearing an elaborately folded robe, often decorated with mirror glass, has become known as the "Mandalay" Buddha, and came to represent the Burmese representation of the Buddha.  In the 19th century, King Mindon moved the capital to this new site and named the city Mandalay. Mandalay was considered the center of the Buddhist universe in Burma, now known as Mynamar.
